Integrated Smart Sensor Polyurethane Coating for wind turbine blades

Thanks to the support of the bilateral FTI-Call Program (IWI, TECXPORT) by the FFG, Almendo Technologies GmbH, together with its partners Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH and sendance GmbH, was able to launch the project Sens4Coat – Integrated Smart Sensor Polyurethane Coating for Wind Turbine Blades. Over a period of 24 months, the team is developing an intelligent coating that uses piezoelectric and piezoresistive systems to monitor vibrations, damage, erosion, and strain on wind turbine rotor blades in real time. The goal is to create a thin, aerodynamically efficient solution that requires no complex surface preparation while integrating wireless sensor technology.

This funding enables the partners to overcome technical challenges such as the sensitivity and selectivity of existing sensor systems, while eliminating the need for costly cabling and maintenance-intensive procedures. Sens4Coat not only increases the reliability and efficiency of wind turbine operations but also contributes to reducing downtime and maintenance costs. The project thus creates a sustainable and economically viable foundation for the wind energy sector.
