RHI Magnesita GmbH

Key technology development for tailored carbon capture and storage solutions in the hard-to-abate sector

With the support of the FFG’s IWI / TECXPORT program, RHI Magnesita GmbH, together with the Montanuniversität Leoben, is setting new standards in CO₂ reduction through the project AbateC – Key Technology Development for Tailored Carbon Capture and Storage Solutions in the Hard-to-Abate Sector. Over a three-year period (November 2024 to October 2027), the partners are developing innovative technologies to help decarbonize the refractory industry at the Chizhou site in Anhui Province, China.

The project focuses on creating a site-specific CCS workflow that ensures safe and efficient CO₂ storage. A particular emphasis lies on in-situ mineralization within hydrothermal systems—an approach that combines laboratory research, simulation, and renewable energy integration. With AbateC, RHI Magnesita not only contributes to decarbonizing one of the most energy-intensive industrial sectors but also demonstrates how international collaboration and applied research can accelerate the transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.
